Marine Staff Sgt. Andrew K. Thompson

Staff Sgt. Andrew K. Thompson, a Marine with 1st Marine Special Operations Command, received the Silver Star, the military's third highest honor, during a ceremony at Camp Pendleton, Calif. on March 12, 2012.

Thompson, who was an element leader with a Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Company A, led his team and a company of Afghan National Army in an operation to clear a village in the Farah province of Afghanistan.

During the operation, the unit came under heavy fire. Thompson resupplied his formation twice while under fire from all directions.
