A Different Kind Of Hero
Zach Turner - 6th Grade Listed 2009 |
| Look in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No it's not Superman. That's what you think a hero is, right? Your hero flies around town and triumphantly defeats villains. That's great, but that's not the only type of hero. Heroes don't need super powers, or be a living thing. A hero needs two things, courage and strength. So what do I see flying in the bright sky when I look up? I see the grand old flag we love. Nothing is more heroic than the American flag.
To begin with, besides being heroic, the American flag displays numerous indications of courage. According to Webster's New World dictionary, the definition of courage is a fearless, brave quality. That's a great trait to have. The courageous flag changes many troubled people's lives, by inspiring them to do their best. The American flag gives me courage every time I observe its beauty. Many Un-American people feel that the American flag is a mere piece of cloth. That cloth is the most courageous cloth in the whole-wide world. The stars and stripes withstand scrutinizing slander from protesters. Cling! Clang! The inspiring flag bangs against its steel pole as it showers all of humanity with a sense of pride. The American flag is as courageous as our soldiers in Iraq. They have tons of courage. I love those colors: red, white, and blue. You can't forget its silky smooth texture either. The flag is a meaningful symbol. It is a symbol of greatness, like Mt. Rushmore, tall and proud. The flag is also as bold as brass. Despite tremendous protests, the flag still stands tall.
Besides being courageous, the flag is also very strong. Bam! Bang! Boom! The powerful flag stuns horrid enemies with its dazzling colors and vivid meaning. Because of its strength, it can triumph over troublesome terrorism and terrible threats. The flag is as strong as an ox. The flag is very tough, as tough as ten body builders combined. If we looked in Webster's dictionary again, we would receive the following definition for strength: powerful, healthy, durable, and intense. If an American flag was raised during an intense tornado, it would withstand the tremendous winds. That's how strong it is. The strong flag is like a huge mountain that protects all. Anti-Americans claim we are weak. One look at our colorful flag changes their minds. Our flag gives us the strength to keep going.
"You're a grand old flag; you're a high flying flag." Heroes have an important lesson for us all. Live your life as you want to and never quit. People give up, heroes don't. The flag will continue to inspire people like you and me. You don't have to fight crime to be a hero. "Whose broad stripes and bright stars lasted through the perilous fight?" It wasn't Captain America's.
