On June 25, 1996, a bomb was detonated near the Khobar Towers housing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Nygaard was awarded the Air Medal for operations conducted during Operation Inherent Resolve while assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 231, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.
