General George Washington and his
Continental Army including Marines ... crossed the Delaware
River on December 25, 1776 to engage British forces (German
mercenaries) in Trenton, New Jersey on December 26th and
then in early January 1777 defeated British forces in the
Battle of Princeton. Both victories were critical in saving
the revolution and winning Independence.
