A night view of the Spring Fire near La Veta, Colorado
during July 2018 that became the third largest in Colorado's
history. It lasted 30+ days with over 108,000 acres burnt
and more than 200 homes destroyed or damaged.
Summary
The Spring Fire was started on June 27, 2018
at 3:57 p.m. by an individual, who was arrested. The
response to contain the wildfire involved several agencies,
including Bureau of Land Management, USDA Forest Service,
Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and local
Volunteer Fire Departments along with Colorado National
Guard Security Forces and Military Police personnel
performing check point and roving patrol work ... to
minimize life safety and other values at risk. Several
communities, including La Veta, in and adjacent to the fire
were evacuated by County Authorities and Law Enforcement. A
variety of tactics were used and several contingency plans
were implemented. Firefighter and public safety remained the
number one priority throughout the duration of this
incident. It was officially contained on July 31, 2018.
