Black Canyon From Oak Flat Trail March 26, 2025
A must experience scenic view from the Oak Flat Loop Trail of the Black Canyon continuing to be carved by the flowing Gunnison River in Colorado. The trail offers variety to the hiker who would like to explore below the rim without going all the way to the river. The trail enters the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness Area and meanders through Gambel Oak, then a forest of Douglas fir, Aspen, and chokecherry. Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time ... Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the thundering Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky with Warner Point being its deepest at 2,722 feet. The South Rim Road is open to vehicles from mid-April to mid-November. In winter, the South Rim Road is open to Gunnison Point. The remainder of the road is closed to vehicles, but open to cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Image created by USA Patriotism! from U.S. National Park Service photo by Zach Schierl.
