Inspiring Independence Monument January 26, 2025
The Independence Monument, a 450 foot tall red sandstone pillar, is the centerpiece of the Colorado National Monument that has a breathtaking scenic view from its plateau top. It is a must inspiring experience on July 4th when Old Glory is raised at the top ... celebrating Independence Day ... which has been done so since July 4, 1911 when John Otto, an expert trail builder and the first caretaker of Colorado National Monument, first did so when he boldly scrambled up Independence Monument. Colorado National Monument, near Grand Junction, Colorado, preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles.
