USCGC Polar Star In Icy McMurdo Sound January 17, 2025 January 7, 2025 - Scenes of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB 10) sitting hove-to ice covered McMurdo Sound, the southernmost passable body of water in the world, with its crew in front of it during Operation Deep Freeze. Polar Star is conducting ice-breaking operations in Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze, a joint service, inter-agency support operation for the National Science Foundation, which manages the United States Antarctic Program.
