Scenic Indian River Estuary December 12, 2024
A scenic nature view of the Indian River estuary in the Sitka National Historical Park with the estuary forming as the river enters into the ocean. The river flows through a large U-shaped post-glacial valley watershed that encompasses 12.3 square miles with an elevation range of sea level to 3,800 feet. The river originates in the rugged mountains of central Baranof Island north of the park and enters Sitka Sound between Crescent and Jamestown Bays. A large portion of the upper basin drains alpine regions while the valley floor is relatively wide, flat, and covered by muskeg and Sitka spruce/western hemlock forests. Sitka National Historical Park ... located on the outer shore of Baranof Island in southeast Alaska, preserves historically and culturally significant sites and artifacts related to the 1804 Battle of Sitka between Tlingit and Russians forces, the Russian-American period in Alaska, and the Native people of Southeast Alaska. Visitors can travel to Sitka by scheduled and charter air services, ferry, and cruise ships. Image created by USA Patriotism! from U.S. National Park Service photo.
