WWII Vet Salutes At OMG 75th Ceremony May 23, 2023
Gene Metcalfe (now 100 in 2023), a World War II veteran and former POW, salutes the crowd after being awarded the Military Order of William along with his deceased fellow U.S. Army WWII veteran Robert C. Blankenship (no image) in Groesbeek, Netherlands on September 18, 2019 in association of the 75th anniversary of World War II Operation Market Garden (OMG). The annual ceremony also honors The bravery and sacrifice of more than 41,600 troops from the US, UK, and Poland, who together constituted the Allied Airborne Army ... who participated in the Operation Market Garden, which was the largest airborne operation in history ... aimed at liberating the Netherlands and gaining a foothold into Nazi Germany by crossing the Maas, Waal, and ultimately the Rhine River.
