Surfside Building Collapse Recovery July 11, 2021 FEMA Urban Search and Rescue workers join first responders in clearing debris in the aftermath of the partially collapsed Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida on July 1, 2021. The collapse occurred on June 24, 2021 at approximately 1:25 a.m. EDT. As of July 10, 2021, a total of 86 people are confirmed to have died, with 11 injured and up to 43 unaccounted for. On July 7th, authorities announced that the objective of the search was transitioning from rescue to recovery, and that the missing victims are presumed dead. The uncollapsed portion of the building was demolished, as a safety precaution due to the approach of Hurricane Elsa.
