Historic Fort Moultrie

Fort Moultrie represents the entire history of static seacoast defense in the United States. Fort Moultrie is part of the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park located on the South Carolina coast in Charleston county.

Fort Moultrie represents the entire history of static seacoast defense in the United States. This fort, the third named Moultrie, shows visitors how fortifications and artillery changed from 1809-1947. Exhibits take the story back to 1776 and the Revolutionary War. The four scenes...

  1. Top Left - Fort Moultrie's Sally Port, or main entrance, where visitors begin their exploration of the fort's timeline.

  2. Top Right - The Fort Moultrie timeline goes back to 1809, when this third fort was constructed. Visible is the oldest standing structure remaining inside the fort, the 1809 powder magazine and three cannons.

  3. Bottom Left - Shown here are two 15" Rodman smoothbore cannons from the 1870s period of modernization Fort Moultrie when it received new artillery and gunpowder magazines.

  4. Bottom Right - The newest part of Fort Moultrie, the Harbor Entrance Control Post commanded the entrance to Charleston Harbor during World War II. Constructed in 1944, all ships entering the area had to contact the HECP before entering the harbor.

Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park consists of Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, the Charleston Light, and Liberty Square. It was known as Fort Sumter National Monument until it was renamed on March 12, 2019. The historical park has two visitors centers, Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center and Fort Moultrie Visitor Center. The Fort Sumter museum focuses on the activities at the fort, including its construction and role during the American Civil War.
