Nov. 19, 2009 - Norfolk Mayor Paul D. Fraim and Robert T. Taylor, chairman of the Board of Directors for Nauticus, the National Maritime Center, unveil the National Maritime Valor Award for Capt. Richard Phillips, former Captain of the container ship MV Maersk Alabama. Phillips received the inaugural award for his efforts to protect his crew when his ship was seized by pirates in April.

Pvt. Adam Johnson, student, School of Infantry, places a turkey into Boy Scout Eric Blackburn’s grocery bag during the 7th annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway hosted by the San Clemente Military Family Outreach at Camp Pendleton, Nov. 23. More than 300 service members and family came out to receive free turkeys and other food items such as pies and canned goods. Patrons also received recipe books and cooking materials. The donations, gathered from San Diego County churches, business and individuals, were passed out by Marines from SOI and children from local youth organizations.

The Virginia-class submarine USS Texas arrived at its new home port in Naval Station Pearl Harbor during an inner-fleet transfer from Groton Submarine Base, Conn., Nov. 23, 2009. The arrival of Texas to Pearl Harbor will mark the second of the Virginia-class subs to be stationed in the Pacific, following the historic arrival of USS Hawaii in July.

(Nov. 29, 2009) Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Heather Ewton, president of Naval Station Mayport's First Class Petty Officer Association, packs care packages at the local USO to send to service members overseas. Collier County Sheriff's Department donated more than 1500 boxes and hundreds of letters as part of their Adopt-a-Soldier program.

The event showed the partnership between the Walt Disney Corp. with the Marine Toys For Tots Foundation, which collects and distributes toys to children during the holiday season. WACO, Texas - U.S. Coast Guard's Ceremonial Honor Guard unfurls an American Flag during a memorial service held in honor of Petty Officer 3rd Class Danny Kreder II, Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009. The flag was presented to Kreder's mother who is at the far right corner of the photograph. A memorial was held in Waco for Kreder, one of seven crewmembers that perished following the crash of a C-130 off the California coast. The Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento based C-130 was conducting a search and rescue mission and a Marine Corps AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter from Camp Pendleton was on a training mission when the aircraft apparently collided over the ocean near San Clemente Island Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009.

USO officials honored the only living Air Force Medal of Honor recipients at the USO of Metropolitan New York's 48th Annual Armed Forces Gala and Gold Medal Dinner Dec. 9, 2009 in New York City. The USO's Distinguished Service Award was presented to Col. Leo K. Thorsness (from left), Col. Joe M. Jackson, Col. James P. Fleming and Col. Bernard F. Fisher. Colonel George E. Day was also honored, but was not at the present at the event. Army Gen. Raymond T. Odierno (far right), the top U.S. commander in Iraq, assisted with the presentation, and also received the USO's Distinguished Service Award.
