The Purple Heart honors fallen and wounded service members of the United States military branches.

The Purple Heart is a heart shaped purple medal with a gold border. The front has a profile of George Washington, while the back has the words for military merit inscribed on it. The medal is attached to a piece of purple silk with a silver border.

Purple Heart Day ... is an annual observance on August 7th that commemorates the Purple Heart Medal ... a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the U.S. military. With its forerunner, the Badge of Military Merit, which took the form of a heart made of purple cloth, the Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members.

Purple Heart Day is meant to remind all Americans to pay their respects to the fallen and wounded service members of the United States military branches ... taking time ... to listen to the stories of active service members and veterans ... and thanking them for their service to the nation.

Purple Heart Day also remains a working day.
