Since its inception in 1947, the Air
Force has consistently broken barriers as an element of the finest
joint warfighting team on the planet, and its Airmen have refined
its mission through innovation and teamwork ... as done when
breaking the sound barrier with the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft
on October 14, 1947 at Mach 1 at an altitude of 45,000 feet ... and
flown by legendary test pilot, Chuck Yeager, who first enlisted as a
private ... before becoming a pilot ... and achieving the rank of Brigadier
General before his retirement from the Air Force in 1975.
