In the Footsteps of Heroes
May 2005 marked the beginning of a great voyage for
a group of World War II Combat Veterans, a voyage of return, in fact, to the
lands where they had served over 60 years ago as young men. For many of the
Veterans it was the first trip back to the lands where they became men, where
they saw their buddies die, where they themselves were wounded, both physically
and spiritually, and where they ultimately saw their sacrifices bloom into the
liberation and growth of Europe.
This "Silent Generation" had never before spoken about their experiences as
young men in the midst of war, least of all to their own families. But the
fellowship of other combat Veterans helped them reveal memories they had kept
hidden for decades. See these brave Veterans walk the bluffs and beaches, the
fields and forests, that helped shape their lives. Hear them speak to each other
about war and fear, life and death, loss and survival, from the viewpoint of
those who were there, and with the perspective of a lifetime.
"In the Footsteps of Heroes" is an extraordinary film that chronicles the return
voyage of men who are the fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers of
today's free men and women.
