March 2014 - A time-lapse of the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star from
Seattle navigating through ice flows en route to Antarctic for
Operation Deep Freeze 2014, which is the U.S. Antarctic Program's
resupply efforts for McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The mission
required the crew of Polar Star to break a navigable shipping lane
through 12 miles of ice in McMurdo Sound, encountering ice up to 10
feet in thickness. The shipping channel was used by the tanker ship
Maersk Peary to deliver approximately three and a half million
gallons of fuel to McMurdo residents, allowing the Station to remain
operational during the freezing winter months.
