Nalls received this medal for saving the life of Sgt. Erick Gutierrez, a squad leader with 1st LAR, during a resupply mission in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Gutierrez had fallen into a 9-foot-deep, 15-foot-wide canal, and because of the strong current unable to get out. Nalls jumped into the frigid water and was able to pull Gutierrez to the riverbank.
