man to walk on the moon in 1969 as commanded the the Apollo 11 spacecraft . . .
making the historic, iconic statement as he stepped onto the surface of the moon...

Neil Armstrong also served as a Navy fighter pilot in the
Korean war, and flew 78 combat missions. Later, as a civilian, he flew extensively as a test pilot
followed by his tenure as an astronaut with NASA.
This American hero and legend
was the recipient of many awards, including the Presidential Medal for Freedom;
Congressional Gold Medal; the Robert J. Collier Trophy; the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy;
and, many medals from other countries.
