Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum,
education, and research complex, consisting of 19 museums and galleries, the
National Zoological Park, and nine research facilities. The Smithsonian is
administered by the U.S. Government through a Board of Regents, consisting of
the Chief Justice of the United States, the Vice President of the United States,
three members of the United States Senate, three members of the United States
House of Representatives, and nine citizens.
