The heroic response by the Texas Military and other first
responders to Hurricane Harvey, a category 4 cyclone, that made its first
landfall on August 25, 2017 around 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi, Texas
near Rockport. Then for the next four days unleashed more than 40 inches of rain as the system slowly meandered over eastern Texas and
adjacent waters, causing catastrophic flooding.
With peak accumulations of 60.58
inches, Harvey is the wettest tropical cyclone on record in the United States. The resulting floods
caused by Hurricane Harvey inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more
than 30,000 people, and prompted more than 17,000 rescues.
Hurricane Harvey became the costliest
tropical cyclone on record, inflicting nearly $200 billion in damage, primarily
from widespread flooding in the Houston metropolitan area.
