Just Before the Battle, Mother country as flag

Just before the battle mother,
I'm thinking Vietnam's a hard, hard road,
Longing hangs in my heart with horrible dread
For this mother's son a heavy load
Just now thinking of you mother
Filled with thoughts of home and God,
As I lay waiting for coming battle
Some this night will sleep beneath the sod.
Tell me again beloved mother,
How the bible says "Love our fellow man."
Tell me again ma, Help me understand
You see, I no longer think I can.
My best friend was walk'n behind me mother
Walkin' and Talk'n about our cars back home
When BAM...
All of a sudden he was gone mother,
Just gone... so how can I love my fellow man
Not when the Army's put a gun in my hand...

Chorus:

Mother, I hope you know I loved you,
I pray memories of me always remain,
With a love that's pure and true,
If a body count lists me with the slain

Oh I long to see you mother
I hear them out there shouting for me
Every fiber of being hating my brother
Every fiber of being hating me
I know life's fraught with danger
As they shoot to draw my fire
The Le Hong Fong forest fills with anger
As to kill me Charley does aspire.

Chorus:

Mother, I hope you always know I loved you,
I pray memories of me remain,
With a love that's pure and true,
If a count lists me with the slain

Oh mother how my heart aches for you
All the things I took for granted
With pictured in my mind the home scene too
My girl, my car beloved
Brothers brave around me lying
Now on my mind war's horror planted
Trip flares and claymore mines set out waiting
For the Vietcong we're ever watching.
Mother, I hope you always know I loved you,
I pray memories of me remain,
With a love that's pure and true,
If a count lists me with the slain
Veterans rally Lo after these many years
Our mothers gone but not forgotten
Full of heartbreak and flowing tears
Look at all the gray hair we've gotten
Patriots to the core but wiser now
Still in Vietnam walking the park
We've spent so long in this valley of shadow
Hoping to find our soul before life gets dark.

About Author... In 1966-67, Gary Jacobson served with B Co 2nd/7th 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam as a combat infantryman and is the recipient of the Purple Heart.

Gary, who resides in Idaho writes stories he hopes are never forgotten, perhaps compelled by a Vietnamese legend that says, "All poets are full of silver threads that rise inside them as the moon grows large." So Gary says he writes because "It is that these silver threads are words poking at me I must let them out. I must! I write for my brothers who cannot bear to talk of what they've seen and to educate those who haven't the foggiest idea about the effect that the horrors of war have on boys-next-door."
