The Weary GI Blues |

|
Sittin' here and sighin' at the tops of my shoes
Cause the day's already colored in dark and somber hues.
I wonder just how long I'll keep payin' these dues: I got
the low-down, dirty, Weary GI blues.
Over twenty
years travelin' from one site to another, Only to
discover that one's just like the other; From
Mississippi's Gulf shore to Alaska north of Nome I've set
down my duffel bag and made myself at home.
Sittin' here sighin' at the tops of my shoes Cause the
day's already colored in dark and somber hues. I wonder
just how long I'll keep payin' these dues: I got the
low-down, dirty, Wanderin' GI Blues.
Perched on this
mountaintop in Spain south of France, Thinkin'
about Barcelona and sweet, Latin romance; But it's in
between paydays and my pockets are all bare And the
chaplain's stopped the travel chits that used to get me
there.
Sittin' here sighin' at the tops of
my shoes Cause the day's already colored in dark and
somber hues. I wonder just how long I'll keep payin'
these dues: I got the low-down, dirty, Horny GI Blues.
Sweet Jesus, there's a Dragon in the night sky overhead
Belching deadly metal fire that's neon bright and red! It
really is named Puff and it's beautiful to behold... But
not to the Viet Cong whose bodies are turning cold.
Sittin' here sighin' at the tops of my shoes
Cause the day's already colored in dark and somber hues.
I wonder just how long I'll keep payin' these dues: I got
the low-down, dirty, Cold Soul GI Blues.
Another
Mountain in Korea  now there's snow up to my ass;
Mumblin' to myself, "Lord, how long can this shit last?"
Musin' on the perfidy of folks I thought were
friends, Lookin' towards the DMZ as another long
day ends.
Sittin' here sighin' at the tops
of my shoes Cause the day's already colored in dark and
somber hues. I wonder just how long I'll keep payin'
these dues: I got the low-down, dirty, Frostbit GI Blues.
Well, now active duty is over and retirement time is
here, Can I lie back on my laurels sippin' San Miguel
beer Dreamin' bout the Ramblas and sweet
songs like Twilight Time? Nope, this stingy GI pension
won't buy no life sublime.
Sittin' here
sighin' at the tops of my shoes Cause the day's already
colored in dark and somber hues. I wonder just how long
I'll keep payin' these dues: I got the low-down, dirty,
Disillusioned GI Blues.
What happened to that promise
of free lifetime medical care? Congress slowly took it
back till now there's nothing there. It's, "What've you
done for me lately" and that's for damn' sure. Yep, it's
supplemental insurance cause the wolf's at the door.
Sittin' here sighin' at the tops of my shoes
Cause the day's already colored in dark and somber hues.
I wonder just how long I'll keep payin' these dues: I got
the low-down, dirty, Back-Stabbed GI Blues. |
