Shields
A Soldier's Prayer |
|
|
The shields of freedom
lie silent
beneath a soft wind blowing
within the breeze of time.
... shields!
unseen in the darkness of history.
Yet some survive.
turn their pale and tarnished faces
toward the warm Sun.
Old shields
... lost
within a remembrance of War.
Reflections of honor
glistening as tears
upon old faces.
Shields!
Old shields
dented, burned and blurred,
around the broken edges of time.,
yet reflecting, the light
of Liberty.
The brightest light I have ever known.
The greatest promise of history.
Freedom!
... living in memory
of the World.
They died for it,
and I was burned by it,
... trying to hold it
within my arms
when everything was bleeding,
and Death seemed the Master of the world.
Yet I see her ghost.Sweet Liberty!
... dancing
within the music of my tears upon this page.
She holds me!
... Smiles!
... when I cannot.
She married me!
... says that she loves me.
... and she knows!
That sorrow
bends the branches of a sacred tree.
and Liberty,
bloody and bowed,
is yet
... a tree still standing.
Alone,
midst shields of warriors,
glowing
beneath the Sun.
Sons and Daughters.!
True shields
of Liberty! |
