None But the Lonely |
|
|
They say that the holidays are the worst times
Many for the first time in their life
Not home for the holidays
For they are in harm's way
Alone, in a dark, desert outpost listening
Hoping that the morning sun will find you alive
Hoping that they will make it safely back to camp
To read an email greeting from a family member
All alone yet not alone, they are among others
Living in cramped quarters onboard floating communities
Decorations and holiday meals for all
Yet all alone, away from loved ones
Nothing beats the loneliness of walking the perimeter fence
Trying to not think of turkey and the trimmings
Or being with family and friends
Safe and secure from harm
Lonely, on a hospital bed in a foreign land
Recovering from wounds caused by a fire fight
Wanting to see a friendly face of a family member
Only to see the faces of nurses and orderlies
All alone, minds begin to wander
Thinking of family and friends so far away
A tree decorated with strings of popcorn, lights and tinsel
None but the lonely, all alone and afraid |
