The Sun
rises
... finds itself smiling
upon a river
moving past an Old Man
with
old
Soldier eyes.
A cup of coffee in his hands
The Sun
leaps upon his lap
like a warm Ca,
and the Day begins.
... and the memories continue
their journey.
The silence,
falling
upon
the old man
with Soldier Eyes.
He rode a train
once...
with others
in the long ago
60's...
when some were gone to the Parris Island
of South Carolina
and the rest
were gone to Ft Jackson
They were Marines
at Parris.
We were Soldiers at Jackson
beneath a southern Sun
that
set our lives
... on
Southern time,
... and a War began.
Somewhere far West of ourselves,
and Far East of our future,
a War began in Vietnam
and so....
... we went our separate ways.
Time waited beside the river...
waiting
for our Death,
or a moment to return
to itself.
Old men
with War in their eyes.
watched.
Soldiers,
... Sailors
Airmen
... and Marines
They watched!
drifting in silence
upon, and
beside
... the river of time.
Time rising...
warm
and silent...
quiet,
as a cup of coffee held
in hands warm to the war,
and all the sacrifice.
Now old,
the day remains
falling
from the blue
that I remember.
... the very blue
that belonged
to ourselves.
Moving on,
we have aged,
and now
we rest in the Sunset.
The burning
so red and gold.
... the question
burning
again and again.
The question...
... and the hearing again
of an old reply.
