Before they lay at rest
Across America's ground
Beneath the ocean deep
Or on a foreign shore
They took an oath to protect to defend
Her people's liberty
Against all those who would threaten to raise
Destructive firey arms.
From America's start of the liberty bell,
To answering a call for another's hell
Our nation's Armed Forces, now a total few
Signed checks in blank
For me and you
To sacrifice limbs, even their lives
For the sake of America's stars and stripes.
With courage and passion
They've charged with the Army,
Been first by land and sea, flown over sand and jungles,
Through darkness crept secretly,
Or sailed on floating cities
In mighty stormy seas.
Now the many lay at rest from sea to shining sea
Leaving behind this legacy: "We gave our best
When called to war, policing ground, or saving more
Who needed the best of America's blood
From her beautiful free, magnificent shores." | By Deborah Tainsh (Author of Heart of a Hawk)
