Sometimes I hear them
moving... so close to silence
at sundown,
or sunrise,
far away in my memory,
... alive
at 2AM.
I remember how very young
we were.
... how strong!
So dedicated
and always! ... so profane.
I light a cigarette
and listen for them
long ago,
... walking the war within my head.
I have never known men so brave.
Never known men that would bravely die
to save another.
I do not know what the future brings.
... but yesterday was Vietnam,
and soldiers by my side.
ONE was our number
and our color.
To each other,
we were gold.
Now!
I grow old.
See names reflecting life
and death... upon a Wall.
... and remembering,
I salute them
one and all. |
