He Was A Common Man |
|
|
As he tilled his fields,
he heard a voice.
Lady Liberty called...
and not so softly did she call him
to the frozen winter
of Valley Forge.
... And his son went with him.
A son so fine, so strong!
... and they both died
fighting the British
at a place called
Brandywine.
both gone & hellip!
... and far from their family
at home.
Asahel and Andreas Beyer
... my wife's people of long ago.
Men of the Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania.
Pioneers of freedom!
... and the very first
to stand.
... D.C.
1999...
I saw them reflected
upon the Wall
... in blue sky
and clouds drifting slowly
across names and
remembered faces
from long ago.
Saw them at the Korean War Memorial
... so cold
and silent
beside the figures of soldiers
and marines
... staring into my eyes!
Saw them walking upon the breeze
above the holy field
of Arlington.
A father
... and a son.
Who fought and died for an idea,
that Americans
could be free.
You!
... and me.
Uncommon courage
from common men
who paid the price
... of Liberty. |
