Ubi Nunc?
by Richard Birrer

Ask not for our heroes
Ask not for our role models
Ask not for our warriors
What has happened to our families
Our days of thanksgiving?
Where are our fathers and mothers?
Where are we going?
Where are the Elysium plains of freedom?

The land is parched and scorched
Storms ravage the granite mountains and snow covers the plains
The terror of lengthening night shadows covers the valley of tears
The joys of Valhalla are no more.
Such suffering, such woe
The elite parasitize the common man
Their altar is the opium of consumption

It is late, as if yesteryear never was
Dawn has yielded to dusk
The inexorable cloak of growing darkness
Covers the relics of a once proud people.
No longer is the cup of fellowship shared.

Hordes overtake our ramparts
The bulwarks are collapsing
Ubi sunt principes gentium?
Where are the standard bearers of virtue and dignity?
A dark pall lies over us
The snare entangles us.

Twilight is here
We drink from the cup of wrath
There is no shame
The ego has slain the heart
Reason gives way to discordant passion
No longer is the warmth of the hearth felt
No longer is enjoyed a secure sanctuary

The messenger of death spreads his malevolence
The pale of anxiety and depression looms large
The predator pads unnoticed, cloying comfort
The Janus-faced soul-eating snake spreads its venom
Insatiably consuming everything in its path
The demon spins his malignant web
O’er the sleeping and stuporous.

Now the twisted guidance of our Fabian helmsmen
Steer a course to oblivion
Scuppered between the anvil and hammer
Home, community, country approach the precipice
The opium of consumption falsely comforts
While worth dwindles and me care prevails
The pabulum of deceit
Spews in our aphyllous halls of ivy
The canker worm gnaws at the core

Our children have been taught too well
Digitized into oblivion
They need no education
They need no thought control
A false self-serving god has consumed their teachers
And the wheel in the sky keeps on turning.

Justice no longer blind
Duty to country yields to increased wealth and power
Honesty has bowed to lies
The wolf and lion claw at the sheep gate
Submission and slavery enchain the sheep
Does darkness lie one step ahead?

Atop a crag the eagle restlessly stretches its talons
From the cloud of darkness the phoenix stirs in the ashes
Truth will not lie in obscurity
It will pierce the veil of deceit
Shall we once again drink from the loving cup?
For those who remember
Who carry the standard
Who understand what it means to be free
The call to nobility harkens
Destiny beckons, it is time
The drums of righteousness summon.

We will rise up again unafraid, a thousand times, like the waves.
Excelsior
Never yielding
Resolute, faithful and vigilant
seeking
finding
striving!
prevailing
Courageous eidolons
Reborn exemplars
Standing ready for their finest hour
