Uncle Dash... (A Remembrance) |
|
|
He was always sleeping on the porch
at Gran's place.
Had a pretty Oriental cat on his chest
that hissed at us.
His arm was all white with scars
and his face was the same.
Granny said he had been in the war.
We were kids back then
and didn't know much about war.
We heard Grampa say... Guadalcanal
and that Uncle Dash was a Marine.
... but back then
I didn't know what a Marine was.
Time took Dash and his Cat to a better place
and time took me to Vietnam.
Time taught me to be a soldier,
as it taught Uncle Dash
to be a Marine.
I have a Cat now
that sleeps with me,
and calms my memories.
She looks just like the cat that
slept on Uncle Dash.
Blue eyes...
a calm and loving kind of cat
that curls upon my chest.
A cat that remembers Dash
and the Solomons... and Guadalcanal
and all the young Marines that went into
silence... there.
A cat that remembers
all of Vietnam. |
