The Quiet Parade | |
|
I went to tell you good-bye today,
To catch one last glimpse of you as you rode away to war
But somehow I missed the parade
Somehow, I was expecting more from everyone
Where was the parade that should have been?
With banging drums and marching bands
Loud and proud, to let the world know
About all the soldiers going away to war
I wanted everyone to know how I feel
To feel the pride and heartache inside my heart
And perhaps to experience the sadness of seeing you leave
Into harm's way; across the world
But the streets were quiet and dark.
Those inside the buildings were at their usual goings on
It seemed like they were ignoring our pain
And my son who was sacrificing so much
There were no flags waving or streets lined with well-wishers
To see you off today
Instead, it was empty, cold and dark
Like my heart feels at this moment
I hope you know how much I love you and how proud I am of you
You said that it was something you had to do
So we will ride out the storm until you come back home
Safe and sound
The parade today is a quiet one
For it is inside my heart and soul
The bands are playing a song of war
And the drums are beating to the sound of my heart
Each step of the march brings you closer to home
And the parade in my heart continues each day
It is building with anticipation and yearning
Until you return home... | By Susie Cooper Copyright 2007 Listed
