My Brother, Sgt. Anton

country as flag

Brother, remember as boys the mountains we sublimed.
Our adventure - our curiosity - our play was without border.
With our smiles and laughter our folks' joy overflowed.
With age came treason - without reason our steps no longer one.
Always choosing the opposing side - seldom I would embrace.
My spirit towards you - how cross - never being space enough.
Always offering love's remedy - your patience unfailing for me.
Can't adequately express enough now - sorry with all regret.
Your voice resounds in my heart again - belonging's echo.
Know this my brother - today we have never closer been.

You're finally home! Sgt. Anton, our dear brother.
Perhaps the meaning of Sgt. I'll never know.
You have ever been our needed sunshine.
You became their guiding star in darkest night.
Sgt. Anton, we love you with every breath.
Sgt. Anton, we render you a thousand gun salute.
HEY! Don't they know Sgt. Anton is my brother?
My endearing brother, so soon goodbye.
Sgt. Anton we now bid thee farewell.
My brother, Sgt. Anton.

Mother's love bleeds her grey for her solider boy.
Her eyes dreamt empty - memories of comfort now trouble.
"When our sonny returns," dad often consoles himself to us.
In your stead he surely would - but this sacrifice of you remains.
Sister protests for peace with candle vigils - street corner pleas.
Crying out for confusion - to ease her pains this she will do.
Your lovely lady beside herself in wedding white - emotionless.
New recipes - garden fresh flowers - photo albums - nightly screams.
Did you get the news of your awaited - it's a girl - Antonette.
Passion's little reminder has blessed all with semblances of you.

My needed brother, so soon goodbye.
Sgt. Anton we now bid thee farewell.
My brother, Sgt. Anton.

Our little Joey forever telling friends of his hero Sgt. Anton.
Over heard him say, "MY brother Anton," is on his way.
Always there to nurture goodness within him.
In your arms - at your side - deep within the heart.
"On danger's front I also should be," I casually remarked.
With tearful eyes Joey expressed, "One will be enough."
Half my age, yet with twice the wisdom he speaks.
Precepts of Christ and words from you witnessed in him.
How shall I uphold his dreams - cheer life's day.
Listening for your voice - help me, Joey to embrace.

My thoughtful brother, so soon goodbye.
Sgt. Anton we now bid thee farewell.
My brother, Sgt. Anton.

You see thousands risked for the peace of people not known.
Liberated unto liberator, "Thank you," would suffice.
Why cries man for freedom if freely it comes?
Does he cry forth from bondage not knowing liberty shall cost.
With raised voices - with clutched fists they despise.
Unity of ways frays - what weight liberation bears.
Tell me brother - what do the children see.
When they shall write - what history shall be portrayed?
Your men amongst disarray how feel they?
Mother with unweaned child - so handle they this liberty deprived people.

My faithful brother, so soon goodbye.
Sgt. Anton we now bid thee farewell.
My brother, Sgt. Anton.

So young - so believing - so much to behold.
Life's meanings still vague to us - how perceive they.
As balm to aching souls so are their letters written.
Daily sorrows silently buried away within their hearts.
All eyes upon their trusted Sgt. - they will follow.
I envision you - my brother, leading them over perils foray.
Gratitude immense - you saved a solider - someone's grown child.
Parcels - calls - visits we receive - blessing your name.
We pour over your letters - media news constantly details.
Hear us say we understand - so desire we - yet how can we.

My brave brother, so soon goodbye.
Sgt. Anton we now bid thee farewell.
My brother, Sgt. Anton.

All are gathered here at your coming - even friends from afar.
Beholding the flag draped box - uniformed bugle corps.
Sister, Gracie can no longer withhold - mother pines away.
Your faithful bride with baby Antonette upon 'Ole Glory's stare.
Father's shoulders bow - our Joey poised comforts all.
Silently your life still assures, "All shall be well."
Ashes to ashes - WHY? I want to know why? - Dust to dust.
Give me a reason - sell me on a purpose - divine providence.
Tell me when all is done - different it will be.
Liberties - democracy - unity - peace for all time - comfort us!

WAIT! Don't they know Sgt. Anton is my brother?
My precious brother, so soon goodbye.
Sgt. Anton we bid thee farewell.
My brother, Sgt. Anton.

Heaven ascending even as to us Heaven sent.
Marines sing of guarding Heaven's streets - securing eternity?
Your willing to bear up weary souls in this borderless war!
My most solemn desire - heart to believe in Heaven's best.
When our Lord to see - remember our sister's earnest request.
Protect our boys abroad until final dawning light - home port called.
With foresight clear we beg for our Joey a better tomorrow.
As the poet Longfellow lined, "...the grave is not the goal."
Surely things are not what they seem - pray for us each.
Ask for me this rest - your presence perpetual - His behest.

You're finally home! Sgt. Anton, our dear brother.
Perhaps the meaning of Sgt I'll never know.
You have ever been our needed sunshine.
You became their guiding star in darkest night.
Sgt. Anton, we love you with every breath.
Sgt. Anton, we render you a thousand gun salute.
Yes! I know now Sgt. Anton is everybody's brother.
My eternal brother, never again goodbye.
Sgt. Anton bid us now farewell.
My brother, Sgt. Anton.
