The Underground Railroad |
| Slaves were treated very badly, So they lived very sadly. They were always hungry, not allowed to learn to read, So they wanted to be freed.
Some of the children were very small but brave, They hid from the masters under the quilt of night, They crossed cold, deep rivers when it was late, They were always full of fright.
The Underground Railway was a way, for the slaves to get away. Those that helped were kind and brave people, Who helped slaves hide in houses, wagons, churches and steeples.
The slaves were filled with glee, When they were finally free. They got liberty and they were free. | Port 2nd Grade Copyright 2005 Listed 10/05/2006Poem "recognized for creative excellence" by School District of Lee County, Ft. Myers, FL |
