ALAMEDA, CA -- Chief Petty Officer Gary Reed, an operations specialist assigned
to the Coast Guard Cutter Sherman homeported here, embraces his young daughter
Samantha and his wife Sara after being underway on a patrol of the Bering Sea
for two months. The Sherman is 378 feet long and one of 12 high-endurance
cutters in the Coast Guard. It is capable of conducting law enforcement
missions, homeland security patrols, and search and rescue.
