Memorial Day Concert on the

2008. Durning earned a
Silver Star and three Purple
Heart medals during World
War II. Serving as an
rifleman, Durning was one of
the first troops to land on
Omaha Beach during the D-Day
Allied invasion of Europe.
He was later captured by
Germans during the Battle of
the Bulge, but he managed to
escape.
