Throughout history, our country has stood together for hardships time and time again. Regardless of devastation, such as the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attack, or Hurricane Katrina in 2005, we have united as a nation to help and serve our duty to one another. Patriotism is more than Fourth of July celebrations or waving a flag. Holding the definition of patriotism, devotion to one's country, each moment we stand in alliance with each other. We progress as a country and stand durable to anything that tries to come amongst us. Between ourselves and other nations, we have to embrace one another in times of need and crisis, but more-so in everyday life to succeed and thrive as a country. Patriotism in the United States of America is necessary because it helps our country stay united.

In our plights of catastrophe, we have all pulled our own encumbrance to assist in relief efforts, such as in different natural disasters, and eras of war. After the 911 occurrence, Americans rose awareness of those that were injured or who had lost their lives because of this catastrophe. Charities were started for the families that had lost someone in the terrorist attack on that gloomy September day. American flags were flown from houses and cars showing how honored our nation felt. Another example of patriotism happened after Pearl Harbor when citizens of the United States flooded recruiting stations of the military to serve proudly for our country. Stating that, we become one nation in a sense of togetherness. In total of what we have accomplished over the years of our history, we have stuck together and continued to move toward our goal. This created the idea of patriotism not just being a common word, but a way of life.

Furthermore, the definition of patriotism shows a deeper meaning, one of either life or death situations, or simply compassion. To a civilian, patriotism may be helping out a deprived family in their home town receive a Thanksgiving meal. Yet to a soldier fighting for our country, the definition of patriotism changes to where he must strive for our country to remain united in difficult situations. Citizens of the United States can show patriotism by supporting our troops. After all, they are the ones that leave their families to go overseas for months to years at a time. Taking into play the different roles of patriotism, in concise words, we are staying as one and fighting for our self-earned freedom.

As a nation we can show patriotism, not only by standing with our hands on our hearts during the national anthem, but by voting. Abraham Lincoln once said, “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.” Voting shows that we pay attention to this country and want good things to happen in the upcoming months and years that follow. Casting your vote displays that one is proud of the United States of America and would like to unite the nation.

Showing patriotism in the United States of America demonstrates that as a nation, we want to be united and invincible to any and every situation that is thrown upon us. Ultimately, throughout our country's decisions and activities, we must remain as a nation in order to keep progressing and succeeding. Compared to other nations, ones with communism and riot, we ourselves encompass freedom, despite war, and can therefore continue to live as we please. When we do experience areas of need, we stay united, and that is patriotism.
